The Juneau Assembly has placed a temporary moratorium on new cell towers for the city. The Juneau Empire reports the temporary moratorium prevents permits to be issued for any new cellphone towers until May 19. Assembly members say they want to adopt a master plan by then regulating where and how cell towers are built. The assembly voted 5-3 to adopt the moratorium. Assemblymen Jerry Nankervis voted against the moratorium. He says people want better cellphone service, which requires cell towers. The moratorium only applies to new cellphone towers and does not apply to towers needed for public health or safety.
