Yukon River Breakup Causing Flooding in Eagle

Breakup on the Yukon River has begun and there is flooding in Eagle, a small community of fewer than 100 people in eastern Alaska near the border with Canada.

Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve ranger Pat Sanders says the ice began moving on Thursday. The preserve is northwest of the town.

Sanders says water and ice was lapping Friday at the sides of buildings nearest the river front, and the village of Eagle is cut off from the main town. The good news is that water levels have dropped some in the main town because water is flowing well in the river's main channel.

There are no reports of injuries. Paramedics are available if needed.
