Alaska State Troopers are investigating the Wednesday death of a 22-month-old infant several days after an all-terrain-vehicle crash, with few details immediately available about what happened.

According to a Friday AST dispatch, Delta Junction troopers were told at about 3:05 p.m. Monday that the child -- later identified as Charles Goss -- was at the local clinic and not breathing.

"It was reported that the child was experiencing breathing problems initially after an ATV crash that had occurred a few days ago but has been okay after that and seemed to have improved," troopers wrote. "The child was transported to Providence Hospital in Anchorage for further treatment and his condition deteriorated."

Goss died at Providence Wednesday while he was being treated.

AST spokesperson Megan Peters says no further details were available about the incident as of Friday afternoon, because troopers did not investigate the initial crash.

"It's under investigation -- this is something that was reported to us after the fact," Peters said.

Troopers say Goss' next of kin have been notified.

Donna Ranson, Goss' grandmother, says several of his organs were donated after his death.

"The surgery removing his heart, liver, and kidneys was a success and three recipients now have a renewed chance at (life)," Ranson wrote in an email to Channel 2. "The organ donor flag is waving proudly at the Providence Hospital main entrance and will fly for 5 days in his honor."

Laura Carpenter, a spokesperson for the state Department of Health and Social Services, says an autopsy on Goss was conducted Friday.

Editor's note: The spelling of Charles Goss' last name has been corrected from "Gross," as stated by Alaska State Troopers, at the request of family members.
