Alaska state Sen. Lesil McGuire (R-Anchorage) confirmed with Channel 2 via phone Wednesday that she will run for lieutenant governor.
McGuire, who was first elected to state House in 2000, filed paperwork with the state and plans a public announcement this afternoon.
The office is currently held by Republican Mead Treadwell, who is considering the possibility of a run for U.S. Senate and plans to announce his intentions by Summer Solstice.
"I'm not surprised that several folks are lining up to declare their intentions for lieutenant governor," Treadwell said Wednesday, pointing out that state legislators are not allowed to fundraise during legislative session.
