The state has approved a request from the Naval Special Warfare Center in Kodiak to conduct training missions on state land.

The Kodiak Daily Mirror says the Navy submitted its request in April, asking to use state land for training purposes up to six times per year.

In approving the proposal, the state Department of Natural Resources said camping is allowed on state land and SEALs training is similar enough to camping to be covered under that allowance.

The state took public comment through May on the proposal.

Officials have said the training area is near the Kodiak Launch Complex but that the boundaries can be adjusted.

There also are grazing leases in the area and proposed land sales.
