Anchorage police say a 31-year-old man already in custody has been charged in a Fairview shooting early Monday that left a man critically injured.

In a statement Monday afternoon, APD spokesperson Jennifer Castro says Neville Xavier Herndon has been charged with first-degree assault, third-degree misconduct involving weapons and driving with a suspended license.

Castro says there aren't any indications that Herndon had led police on a chase after the shooting.

"From what we understand, he had been driving with a suspended license, and that's why that was added in there," Castro said.

APD responded at about 2 a.m. Monday to reports of the shooting, in an alley between LaTouche Street and Medfra Street off 13th Avenue.

According to an initial statement from Castro, the victim -- a man in his early 20s -- was found in the alley with multiple gunshots to his torso and legs. He was taken to a local hospital, where he remains in critical condition Monday morning.

Castro says investigators do not think the crime was incidental.

"We don't believe this was a random thing," Castro said. "We haven't determined a motive, but we do not believe these two were strangers to each other."

Police interviewed multiple witnesses to the shooting, but anyone who saw it and hasn't spoken with officers should call APD at 786-8900.

Channel 2's Chris Klint contributed information to this story.
