Big Island police say a former Alaska man whose pregnant girlfriend was found strangled is now a suspect in her murder.
Police are looking for 22-year-old Boaz Johnson, formerly of Petersburg, Alaska. Police say he may still be on the island.
He's hasn't been heard from since May 27, a day before Brittany-Jane Royal's body was found off the Puna coast.
Police initially investigated his disappearance as a missing person case and later said he was wanted for questioning in Royal's death. Police on Wednesday said he's become a suspect.
His family told the Hawaii Tribune-Herald he may have also been the victim of violence and has been unfairly portrayed as a suspect.
Royal's family members are planning a July 27 memorial in Tustin, Calif., her hometown.
