The U.S. Army has recommended the demolition of two World War II-era hangars at Fort Wainwright in a draft report.
The Army says the hangars don't fit with the fort's mission.
The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reports the hangars were built in 1943 and 1944 and have been modified in the decades since, but they aren't considered safe.
A Feb. 17, 2011, fire charred the roof on one side of the hangars. An investigation concluded it occurred because of a faulting covering on an electrical wire.
The Army said it's seeking an agreement with the Alaska State Historic Preservation Office and the federal Advisory Council on Historic Preservation "to mitigate adverse effects."
